The Top 10 Ads and Earned Media for Super Bowl 2011

Editor’s Note: Brian Shin is the CEO and founder of Visible Measures, a firm that measures and reports on the universe of online video performance for advertisers and publishers and publishes the weekly Viral Video Chart with Advertising Age.

Visible Measures is working with YouTube this year to understand the social video performance of Super Bowl ads across 200+ video sites, including YouTube. What is social video? Social video means that people are not just watching but engaging with video by sharing, copying or re-posting, commenting or rating, and much more. And that activity can lead to what we call “earned media” for an advertiser - essentially additional video views driven by word-of-mouth.

In just 10 days, ads aired during this year’s Super Bowl generated 230M views -- more than all previous Super Bowl ad views combined. We project that 2011 views will eclipse the total combined view counts for the Super Bowl ads from 2009 (99 million views) and 2010 (150 million views).

As you might imagine, the data for the entire flight of the 2011 Super Bowl ads continues to grow and evolve. But we can provide an early snapshot of the overall ad performance and trends to see who came out on top.

Read initial results at our blog where we look at:
  • What drives video views and what best practices can an advertiser adopt?
  • What does it take to earn a Top 10 spot and how has that changed over the years?
  • Which is growing faster: online or broadcast viewership?
  • Who came out on top: auto or CPG?
We’ll continue to watch the online battle and report back in a few weeks. In our experience, 50% of earned media typically occurs after the first week of the campaign -- now, essentially -- and of course, video views aren’t the whole story. We’ll have a sense of which videos have been more engaging over time and which ones rate more positive in sentiment analysis. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, to see more in-depth results and understand what other dynamics we continue to monitor, please visit our blog.

Deadline approaching for submissions to TED’s Ads Worth Spreading Challenge!

Earlier in December, YouTube announced that it is teaming up with TED’s Ads Worth Spreading challenge, which will reward advertisers for innovation, intelligence, authenticity, humor, and craft. With less than one week to deadline, TED is making a final call for submissions to the Ads Worth Spreading challenge -- an initiative to find, recognize and reward campaigns that people want to watch and to share.

Whether you’re a well-heeled creative professional or an indie media whiz, if you’ve created a piece every bit as compelling as your favorite TED talk, submit your entry here by Monday, February 7. If you’ve recently seen work that inspires you, nudge its creators to do the same.

TED is looking for a range of submissions. Yours might be:
  • a beautifully produced, :60 cinematic TV spot for a top brand
  • a long-form 3-minute video too long for network but perfect for online
  • a spec spot that has a hugely compelling idea or new use of technology
  • an online video of your CEO giving a short, TED-like talk about your company's idea to change the world
  • a PSA that makes you cry and click Share
The 10 best campaigns will be announced on the main stage at TED2011 in Long Beach, get incredible exposure on YouTube's home page and spend a week on TED.com as post-roll. One member of each winning team will spend a day at TED2011 in Long Beach and attend an exclusive celebration in March in New York, thrown through the generous support of YouTube. For more information, visit Ads Worth Spreading on TED.com.

Get over the post-holiday blues with inspiration from YouTube

Ads are enjoyable content, too. Well, sometimes. Our friends at YouTube took an informal poll across their owns teams and industry reporters to determine their favorite ads on YouTube from 2010. With audiences, platforms, and devices continuing to fragment into more specific niches, earning people’s attention has become challenging. So it's no small task that these ads successfully found their audiences and broke through all the noise with content that people seek, love, and share with others.

Visit the YouTube Blog to see which ads made the cut and draw a little inspiration for your own work!

What makes an ad worth spreading?

Today we bring you a post from the YouTube Blog written by Chris Anderson, Curator of TED, a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Anderson explains how TED and YouTube are teaming up to present a challenge called 'Ads Worth Spreading'.

Video is a powerful medium for spreading ideas. Over the past four years, TED has posted over 800 TEDTalks on TED.com and on YouTube. We've been thrilled to see the world respond -- watching the videos more than 375 million times.

Our mission -- of spreading ideas around the world -- is supported in part by advertising. And we believe that advertising should evoke the same emotions a TEDTalk does -- it should make you think, make you respond, make you want to share -- a great idea, a product that makes the world better, an initiative that might change the world. Like YouTube, we want to see the same level of passion in online ads as we do in our TEDTalks. So, we’ve created a challenge called 'Ads Worth Spreading' to solicit the best ads that raise the bar, elevate the craft and invent new forms of online engagement.

We invite you to enter the competition. Entries can be hysterically funny, stunningly beautiful, or just intriguing, fascinating, ingenious and persuasive. For inspiration, check out examples of great creative on YouTube Show and Tell. It is free to enter, the submission deadline is February 7, 2011, and full contest rules are right here.

We’re excited to see your ads worth spreading!

TrueView Video Ads give viewers choice and control over ads

Today we're announcing a new family of ad formats called TrueView Video Ads. TrueView Video Ads give viewers choice and control over which advertiser’s message they want to see and when. And we charge advertisers only when a viewer has chosen to watch your ad, not when an impression is served.

We believe offering a cost-per-view video ad model is good for everyone: consumers choose ads that are more relevant to them; you more precisely find the audiences you want; and content creators continue to fund great content with an ad experience that is less intrusive. Our experience with Promoted Videos, which you buy on a cost-per-click basis, shows that viewers will choose to watch ads that are relevant and engaging.

Our first available cost-per-view format is TrueView Video Ads - InStream. Viewers can choose to skip a video ad after 5 seconds, and you only pay when the viewer has watched the full ad or 30 seconds, whichever is shorter.

We’ve tested this ad format across thousands of viewer hours, serving millions of video views for a wide range of advertisers. If you counted up all the video views watched, they would stretch out for nearly five years. Early results are encouraging with view-through rates of 20-70%. A view-through rate measures how many viewers have opted-in to watch your ad - a valuable signal which you can use in connecting the right message with the right audience at the right time.

Check out the experience of some of our early advertisers. GoPro makes and sells the HD HERO line of wearable, gear-mountable HD cameras. Lee Topar, Director of Online Marketing for GoPro, says, “We like how TrueView Video Ads give us the ability to target our audience, and gives viewers the choice to opt-in to watch our ads. Thus far, we’ve seen about a 40% view-through rate -- and since we only pay when potential customers actually watch a video, we have more control over our budget.”

In the run-up to the recent US midterm elections, many political campaigns tested TrueView with positive results. Peter Pasi heads up Emotive LLC, an online marketing firm which recently helped to elect Senator-elect Rob Portman and Governor-elect John Kasich in Ohio. He says, "TrueView allows us to deliver our message in a scalable way specifically to the voters we want to reach. For example, we used its geo-targeting capabilities to execute a county-by-county media strategy. TrueView also provides a rich experience for the voter and allows the viewer choice and freedom. It’s easy to deploy, and it's a fraction of the cost of television."

Robert Wray served as the director of technology in Governor Martin O’Malley’s re-election campaign in Maryland. He says, “The Governor had used YouTube prior to the re-election so it was a no-brainer to use it in the campaign. We achieved a 45% view-through rate with TrueView ads and found them to be effective when you look at the raw numbers of total video views and the amount we paid for them.”

This ad format is available for customers in the US and Canada and in limited testing for advertisers in the UK. We are working to add availability in additional countries.

Several other developments are also in the works. Soon, you'll be able to use TrueView Video Ads to increase a video’s view count. We are working to make TrueView Video Ads available for our self-service customers and to simplify the buying experience and reporting for everyone.

If you’re interested in trying out TrueView Video Ads, contact your account manager today.

Your Creativity Wins with TrueView Video Ads

Today we announce a new family of ad formats called TrueView Video Ads. TrueView Video Ads give viewers choice and control over which advertiser’s message they want to see and when. And we charge advertisers only when a viewer has chosen to watch your ad, not when an impression is served.

Why are we offering cost-per-view video ads? We believe this model creates wins for everyone: consumers choose ads that are more relevant to them; advertisers more precisely find the audiences they want; and content creators continue to fund great content with an ad experience that is less intrusive.

In the end, it will also be the creativity of agencies and advertisers who will win. It’s not about being funny or clever – it’s about delivering the right message to the right person at the right time. And TrueView Video Ads can help get you and your client there, combining the brand engagement and reach of YouTube with the conversion tracking and optimization of online advertising.

Our first available cost-per-view format is TrueView Video Ads - InStream format. Viewers can choose to skip a video ad after 5 seconds or watch the ad. An advertiser only gets charged when the viewer has watched the full ad or 30 seconds, whichever is shorter.

If you’re interested in trying out TrueView Video Ads, contact your account manager today. This ad format is available for customers in the US and Canada and in limited testing for advertisers in the UK. We are working to add availability in additional countries.

Live webcast: 5 Tips to Turbo-Charge Your Online Marketing Campaign With YouTube

Event Date: November 16, 2010 at 02:00 PM East/12:00PM Central/11AM Pacific. Register today.

As a dentist, Dr. Bob Wagstaff knew he had a better way to cure bad breath than most other solutions in the market. So he founded Orabrush to sell a tongue brush to help consumers more easily clean their tongues of the germs that cause bad breath. When Dr. Bob first tried promoting his new invention, many forms of traditional advertising failed him. A $50,000 infomercial went nowhere. Then, Jeffrey Harmon suggested a marketing campaign built around a YouTube video. That first video cost $500 and has since earned the company over 13 million views, setting Orabrush on the path as an innovator in online video marketing.

Join this live Webcast with AdAge to hear from Jeffrey Harmon and Abe Neiderhauser, the team that has helped earn Orabrush more than $1,000,000 in sales through YouTube, AdWords and online marketing.

YouTube provides a creative canvas for anyone with the gumption and a video camera to build an online marketing campaign that can reach millions. Orabrush is a company founded by a dentist to sell a tongue brush that would fight bad breath. After attempts to use traditional marketing channels failed, Jeffrey Harmon thought up a marketing campaign built around a YouTube video to spread the word about this new product. That first video cost $500 and has since earned the company over 13 million views, setting it on the path as an innovator in online video marketing.

Join a live Webcast with AdAge on Tuesday, November 16th at 11amPST / 2pmEST to hear Jeffrey Harmon and Abe Neiderhauser share their thoughts about what works and what doesn’t with online video advertising.

Original Skateboards on building a brand and increasing sales in tandem

Editors note: Today’s guest blogger is Scott Imbrie, CEO and Co-Founder of Original Skateboards. His passion is longboarding, a popular form of skateboarding that blends elements of surfing and snowboarding. Scott started Original in 2002 with his brother, Brad. The brothers began selling longboards shortly after Scott's 20th birthday, when Brad was just 17. Original distributes its products in most surf, skate, and snowboard shops on the East Coast of the United States and in many other areas around the world.

My brother Brad and I started Original in 2002. We both loved board sports and saw longboarding as our ideal next adventure. At the time, it was almost entirely unknown. We wanted to build longboards and trucks that would allow descents of the steepest paved roads in the world. We also wanted to travel to those locations to prove it could be done. YouTube and Google AdWords have helped us to achieve those goals.

Since March 2005, we have been using Google AdWords for online search advertising. In conjunction with positive organic rankings, search placement (even on terms where our organic rankings are top 5) has helped us ensure brand presence for our primary keywords; it has also established us as a leading brand in our industry. Building on this strong search marketing foundation, we expanded our AdWords efforts to the Google Display Network. The Display Network consistently contributes additional conversions and expands market awareness of our brand.

In our experience, Display Network site visitors interact more often with our Brand Channel. Despite having an immediate conversion rate lower than search based visitors, they are more likely to share their experience socially. By providing these more active customers sharable content, such as YouTube videos, we make the most of our Display Network clicks.

That being said, YouTube is much more than a simple way to allow our customers to share our videos. YouTube helps us find customers globally through video. We now have more than 105,000 YouTube subscribers, and our business has grown by a factor of 10 since we aired the first video.

For more information on how Google AdWords and YouTube have helped us grow a successful small business based on global reach, strong branding, and consistent sales conversions, head on over to the YouTube Blog.

75% of YouTube Mobile users report that mobile is their primary way of accessing YouTube content

[This has been cross-posted from the Google Mobile Ads Blog]

Usage of m.youtube.com is exploding and mobile consumers watch hundreds of millions of video views on YouTube Mobile each month. To better understand these users and their browsing and video consuming behavior we recently ran a survey of users on m.youtube.com and received >16,000 responses. Some of the results may surprise you:
  • 75% of respondents say that mobile is their primary way of accessing YouTube
  • 70% visit YouTube Mobile at least once a day
  • 58% spend more than 20 minutes per visit to YouTube Mobile
  • 38% feel that YouTube Mobile is replacing their desktop YouTube usage
However, these results may not be as surprising when you learn that, according to Nielsen, YouTube Mobile is the #1 video viewing mobile website in the US, with more than 7.1MM monthly unique users. Advertisers can now own 100% share-of-voice on YouTube Mobile (m.youtube.com) by purchasing a daily roadblock and owning all available ad impressions for 24 hours. Ads run on the Search, Browse and Home pages of the mobile website. Here’s an example of a recent Diet Coke campaign:

The roadblock runs across the Search, Browse and Home pages of
m.youtube.com

Advertisers from a range of verticals have successfully run roadblocks on YouTube Mobile including autos, CPG, entertainment, retail and others. Many advertisers choose to time their YouTube Mobile Roadblocks to coincide with product launches, sales events, or other days they are making a big media push. Purchasing a roadblock of YouTube Mobile is an excellent complement to campaigns you may be running on YouTube’s desktop as you can reach users as they interact with YouTube from their device of choice.

We’ve launched this opportunity in the US and we’re excited to roll it out in multiple international markets soon.

YouTube Promoted Videos serves its 500,000,000th video view

YouTube served its 500,000,000th Promoted Video view this week. Using Promoted Videos (available in your AdWords account), businesses can promote a video against search results on YouTube. But Promoted Videos offers a discovery component as well, allowing advertiser’s messages to be promoted against related content (BBQ grills shown against recipes for hamburgers) that someone may be viewing as they browse videos on YouTube. For more information on new product enhancements, please see the full story on the YouTube blog.

A half billion video views and counting for YouTube’s Promoted Videos

YouTube reports that it has served its 500,000,000th Promoted Video view this week. This ad product combines the branding capabilities of video with the direct response action of search advertising, allowing advertisers to promote their videos against search results or related videos on YouTube. Additionally, with the Promoted Videos API, agencies can now more easily manage complex campaigns across multiple clients. For additional information, please see the full story on the YouTube blog.

Getting Ready for the Holidays with YouTube

Are you getting ready for the holidays? With the holidays less than 2 months away, we wanted to share some seasonally-focused resources and tips with you from our friends at YouTube. They've prepared some marketing strategies to help you and your clients take advantage of this time of the year on the top online video destination.

Tip #1: Customize a YouTube Brand Channel
Just as a retail store would dress up its window during the holidays, take advantage of enhanced features to customize clients' channels. For example, you can showcase their products with the 300x250 display ad; integrate all of their social media efforts with the channel banner that appears at the top of your channel page; and help them stay connected with customers with a remarketing campain that targets users who have visited their YouTube channel.

Tip #2: Show off products through video this holiday season
YouTube is the second-largest search engine after Google. Your clients probably have a search engine strategy for the top search engines—is YouTube included in that plan? Videos are a compelling way to feature products, services, and brands. When clients' target audiences are searching on YouTube make sure their videos are surfaced with promoted videos.

Tip #3: Place holiday creatives against relative videos
Help clients reach their audience in a ‘lean forward’ media platform where people are seeking video engagement and information. Find videos or video categories that resonate with their brand or target audience and pair holiday display ads against them.

Tip #4: Bring holiday TV ads online
In 2009, people spent more time watching online video than checking their email! Use TV creatives or online videos to run as preroll before videos on YouTube and get in front of this tremendous audience. Engagement rates are also compelling with an average CTR of 1.9%. An ad format that answers your holiday wish.

Tip #5: YouTube Video Gift Guide
Now consumers have a place to watch and shop on YouTube! This holiday shopping video hub is open to all advertising partners with video assets. Our guide provides consumers with the opportunity to watch and shop and provide advertisers with one destination to showcase their holiday video ads. Contact a sales representative to get started.

We’ve made your list, now check it twice and have a great holiday season!

Grow traffic with help from YouTube videos and AdWords

Editors note: Today’s guest bloggers are Troy Olson, Digital Advertising Manager, and Jeff Loquist, Search Marketing Manager, for ShoppersChoice.com. ShoppersChoice.com owns and operates a family of web stores with a wide selection of products, from barbecue grills and accessories to patio sets.

We started out with search-based advertising using Google AdWords. It helped us get traffic to our site BBQGuys.com at a relatively low cost – AdWords has been a great way to help us capture customers when they’re looking for a “BBQ grill” and other items we offer.

We happened upon marketing on YouTube almost by accident. In response to customer service calls, we started creating instructional videos to show people how to best use their BBQ grills. We were getting a lot of traffic and great comments. So we decided to build out our Brand Channel and add more content, such as recipes by Chef Tony. YouTube is great for conveying our company image, and distributing unique content that people can relate to, especially people who enjoy food and eating! Learn more about our “secret sauce” for success that combines YouTube and AdWords.

Google Media Solutions Series: Part 2, YouTube - Bring Creative Solutions to Your Clients

Thanks for joining us for the second installment of the Google Media Solutions series. We switched things up and will be sharing a YouTube update this week, with the Google Display Network and Remarketing post coming next week.

Online video represents a huge opportunity to reach potential customers with new, compelling formats. YouTube is the perfect platform to reach these customers, drive sales and enhance branding initiatives.

There are many benefits to advertising on YouTube. It is a unique platform which allows your clients to reach potential customers who are engaging online. You can set up YouTube campaigns through the AdWords interface. With our new YouTube Video Targeting Tool, you can target specific audiences based on interest, demographic or specific video content. Your clients can create their message and share it with consumers with their videos or display ads. Additionally, after running a campaign, you can use YouTube Insight to learn how potential customers are interacting with your clients' videos.

There might be some confusion around YouTube ad formats, so here’s some clarification:
  • I am not sure if my clients' audiences are on YouTube?: Your clients' audiences are watching YouTube videos. YouTube has users of all ages and 32% of users are between the ages of 35 and 54*. In fact, if the YouTube audience were a country, it would be the 3rd largest country in the world with over 420 million unique visitors every month.
  • Our clients don’t have video content. How can we use YouTube?: You don’t need to have video content to advertise on YouTube. You can target your clients' audiences on YouTube with display, text or video ads. Our recommendation, since YouTube is a visual medium, is to test out display ads.
  • Is there professional content on YouTube?: YouTube has over 3,500 content partners, including CBS, TV Guide, Fred and JuicyStar07. Our partners are actively uploading content and the video landscape is constantly changing. As this is the case, your clients' target audiences are returning to see new, updated content on YouTube!
Check in next week for the third post, which will be on the Google Display Network, Remarketing and great tips for reaching your customers while they browse the web!* comScore MediaMetrix, September 2009

Update to yesterday's post, "Behind the scenes of Weezer's new album launch"

Editor's Note: Yesterday's post by guest blogger Ben Patterson of DashGo showed how the creativity of Weezer, combined with the power of YouTube, resulted in a successful album launch (with great traffic for rising artists to boot). Ben also provided details on the reach of this campaign, which he shares with us below:

From a media perspective, DashGo is 100% focused on what is typically called "digital marketing" but I prefer to just call "marketing." The web is where opinions and decisions are made today - especially for content. Reality TV isn't a success until it's "gone viral." Movie studios blame or applaud Twitter for opening weekend box office. Today you have to find an audience, they no longer find you. YouTube and the community of YouTubers offered my client, Weezer, an indie rock band, that opportunity.

Last week, Weezer launched their new album, Hurley. In addition to an untold number of news articles, the YouTube videos with Weezer got over 5 million video views within the first 24 hours. I believe that we were successful because Weezer was willing to step outside a comfort zone and that opened up their music to millions of people. Tracking trends on Twitter and Facebook showed thousands of mentions and tens of thousands of hits to the new Weezer.com. Best of all, the new album Hurley hit the top 10 on iTunes charts and #1 on Amazon MP3.
