HOLY Robot

HOLY Robot
2 October - 2008 - 11 January 2009presented at the 3d International Biennial of Contemporary Art in the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) in Seville (SPAIN). The installation 'bios [bible]' consists of an industrial robot, which writes down the bible on rolls of paper. The machine draws the calligraphic lines with high precision. Like a monk in the scriptorium it creates step by step the text.Starting with the old testament and the books of Moses ‘bios [bible]’ produces within seven month continuously the whole book. All 66 books of the bible are written on rolls and then retained and presented in the library of the installation.‘bios [bible]’ is focussing on the questions of faith and technical progress. The installation correlates two cultural systems which are fundamental for societies today – religion and scientific rationalism. In this contexts scripture has all times an elementary function, as holy scripture or as formal writing of knowledge.In computer technology 'basic input output system' (bios) designates the module which basicaly coordinates the interchange between hard- and software. Therefore it contains the indispensable code, the essential program writing, on which every further program can be established. More images after the break...

ABOUT robotlabrobotlab works with industrial robots in public spaces. It explores the relationship between man and machine by means of installations and experformances.robots will play a significant role in future societies and invade more and more human domains. The most prevalent robots today are the industrial robots. Their number is rapidly increasing worldwide and has already exceeded one million. With continual development their mechanical and electronical capabilities grow. The direct coupling of precise mechanics and information processing electronics results in a powerful technology which is discussed in the sciences under the subjects of 'artificial intelligence' and 'artificial life'.Up until now, people haven't had the chance to meet robots neither in public nor in private spaces. robots are mostly situated in special industrial spaces, therefore humans do not have contact with them, do not experience how they behave and do not know how to behave correctly with them. Today social patterns between man and machines do not exist. Instead there are only fictional images from science fiction literature and films.robotlab creates experimental situations in exhibition spaces, in which the public has the opportunity to interact with robots. The massive appearance of the robots, the movements and the machine sounds effect the visitor, are interpretated individually and evoke ideas which may lay in the field of practical purposes as well as formulate an utopian image of a future culture with man and machine.robotlab is founded 2000 by Matthias Gommel, Martina Haitz and Jan Zappe. The free artist group is associated to the Institute of Visual Media at the ZKM - Center of Art and Media Karlsruhe, Deutschland. Cookie Time!

This is one of my husband's favorites, but let's face it, who doesn't love Brittle! All kinds, Peanut, Almond, Macadamia Nut... and this recipe is so versitle that you can make any of those variations, in 10 minutes and in your Microwave!!!
Yes, in 10 minutes and in your microwave!!! No candy thermometer, and everyone loves it!!! No one believes me when I say it only takes 10 minutes!
{I make like 12 batches a year and give it all my neighbors!}
10-Minute Peanut Brittle
Ingredients:
1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Light corn syrup
1/8 tsp Salt
1 1/2 cups Peanuts (or Almonds, or whatever nut you choose)
1 TBS Butter
1 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Baking Soda
Directions:
Combine sugar, syrup, and salt in a 2 quart casserole dish (ceramic, like Pyrex)
Microwave on high for 5 minutes
Stir in nuts very quickly
Microwave 2 to 5 mnutes, stirring after 2 and 4 minutes until syrup and peanuts are lightly browned.
Stir in butter, vanilla, and baking soda until light and foamy.
Spread to 1/4" thickness on a well buttered or Pam'ed cookie sheet
Once cool, break into pieces and store in tin.
For a super special touch, once cool dip one end of the brittle into Chocolate and let cool again!
Enjoy!!!

Giving Thanks!

Fighter Motorcycle at Neiman Marcus

Maybe I have 007 on the brain because of the new Quantum of Solace movie but this Limited Edition Fighter Motorcycle certainly strikes me as something Bond-worthy (I'm sure the photo above has something to do with that impression too). The raw, bare-bones design in nothing but silver steel and black rubber makes for a minimalistic but still "bad ass" look, which the bike backs up with an exciting array of high-tech features and the ability to fly down the highway at speeds up to 190mph.

Triple silken pumpkin pie takes the prize

What is the first thing that most people associate with Thanksgiving? Well, probably turkey, but pumpkin pie comes in a close second. As I am not a fan of the traditional pumpkin pie, I set out on a quest to find a delicious alternative this year. My search led me to a robust cookbook sitting on my kitchen shelves. Sheri Yard's Desserts by the Yard is an amazing compilation of a pastry chef's career spanning from coast to coast. What I found in that book turned out to be the most fluffy, decadent, flaky, scrumptious pie I have ever tasted. And apparently my officemates liked it just as much -- the triple silken pumpkin pie and I took home first place in last week's bake-off at our New York office! So if you're looking for a holiday-perfect pie, I encourage you to try out the recipe (PDF file). It takes a little time to make, but it's so worth it.

Happy baking, and happy Thanksgiving!

Postage...

I know this has been talked about on this blog before, and every bride thinks about how much her invitations will cost and how much will they cost to mail.

But you never know until those bad boys are actually in your hands. Don't assume that just becasue they measure properly for a .42 stamp that they actually will weigh properly for a 1 ounce stamp.

Wait until you have them and then bring them to the post office, have them weigh and measure them - then you will know the proper postage amount. You may even want to bring two, just in case.

Amazing 11 year old Player

A little holiday helper: Display ad builder

You've probably heard of the AdWords display ad builder, our free tool that enables you to create image ads quickly and easily. As the holidays approach, it's important for retail and other consumer-oriented businesses to highlight their key products and be able to create fresh ads based on inventory and demand levels. Display ad builder can help you do just that, without the need for professional designers or a long turn-around time.

Here are some ideas for how to use the display ad builder tool and image ads to help drive sales for your clients:
  • Create image ads around a high-demand product, and use text to highlight any deals or promotions you're offering for the holidays. For example, if there's a lot of demand for a particular toy (perhaps the Tickle Me Elmo of 2008), use an image of that toy to drive user recall and entice them to buy the item from your store.
  • Create multiple ads so that as the holidays approach, you can react quickly to inventory levels and demand.
  • Use images to promote items that aren't selling as well. It can be easy for shoppers to think only of what's hot this holiday season. Images can remind them of additional needs, like household goods or appliances that are good gift ideas but may not get a lot of hype.
  • Use holiday pictures and backgrounds to create themed ads. As the holiday season approaches, use image ads to convey greetings and highlight any special offers.

Display ad builder best practices

Last week, we posted about recent improvements we've made to the display ad builder. Now we'd like to share some best practices for using the tool. Hopefully these tips will help you get off to a running start with your new display campaigns:

Customize your ads to make them stand out. Here are some ways you can do that:
  • Choose the color scheme of your ad, like the background and font color, to align it with your unique product and brand.
  • Ensure text and images are a proper fit. Review all available ad sizes for each template to ensure that the text displays properly and images fit the ad slot. Upload images and logos that fit the recommended specifications we display as you create your ad.
  • Try out different templates. You can see which one yields the best performance and optimize accordingly.
  • Consider transparent PNG graphics. They can make your ads look more professional by matching the background of both the image and the ad.
Consider separating your display ads into their own ad group. This will allow you to:
  • Set unique bids for your display ads. For example, you may want to bid more competitively for you display ad, since it has to rank high enough to place above the other ads competing for the same spot.
  • Use unique keywords for your display ads, without impacting the performance of your text-only ad groups, especially those running on search as well as the Google content network
Double-check your ads to ensure they meet the following criteria:
  • Your display URL should be visible. If it's the same color as the ad's background color, it won't be visible to the user.
  • Uploaded images should be less than 50KB. Otherwise your ad won't be eligible to run.
Now that you're armed with these tips on creating effective display ads, please try out the display ad builder and let us know how it's working for you. If you want to learn more about the tool, please visit the display ad builder site.

Blogging Brides!

Name:: Ashley

Location:: Now we're living in Colorado but we're getting married right outside our hometown back in Pennsylvania.

Blog:: Lost in the Moment

Wedding Date:: July 25th, 2009

What do you do in real life?

Currently I am a full time student at Colorado State, majoring in Computer Science. I also work part time as a customer service rep for Bare Escentuals (mineral make up company).

Favorite Part about Planning your Wedding?

All of the DIY stuff! I have had such a blast making some of these projects with my bridesmaids and even my FI! I feel like they show just a little more of who we are too, because they're designed to represent us, not some template that can be found on the internet.

Least Favorite Part about Planning your Wedding?

Planning an out of state wedding. We only go home once a year, at Christmas time, and last Christmas we hadn't even started planning. In March I then had to go back home by myself to find a venue for the ceremony and reception as well as the photographer/dj. I feel like I'm missing out on the experiance of planning my wedding with my FI.

What is the best piece of wedding advice you've ever received?

In the end no one is going to care as much about your wedding as YOU do. I read a post on theknot about this and its been the best stress reliever when trying to make decisions. You just need to relax and continue on because your the only one thats going to notice if the napkins are a shade darker then the programs, or the ribbon on your Save the Dates is a little crinkled :) Don't worry about the little things, just remember the meaning of the day!
